Transfer of Registrations & Charges

The registration plate transfer process is easy but can be daunting if you've never done it before. Here we will explain in detail the procedures involved with assigning, transfering and retaining personalised number plates.

When you buy a personalised number, you're infact buying the right to assign the number to a vehicle and display it on it's number plates. The vehicle can be registered in your name, or the name of someone else ('the nominee')

Assigning a personalised number to a vehicle.

If you have bought a personalised number, you'll need to apply to DVLA to assign it to a vehicle. It can be used on a vehicle that is registerested or about to be registered, taxed and used in Great Britain.

You will need the following:

  • the V750 certificate of entitlment or the V778 retention document signed by the person named on the top of the certificate.
  • the log book (V5C) or the new keeper suppliment with a completed V62 'application for a vehicle registration certificate V5C' form.
  • an MOT test certificate for vehicles over 3 years old (1 year for heavy goods vehicles)

**Pre 1960 vehicles NEED a valid MOT to assign a registration mark**

You can't:

  • put a personalised registration number onto a 'Q' number plate.
  • make the vehicle look newer than it actually is.

Adding a nominee or taxing your vehicle when you assign the number.

You can add a nominee when assining the registration number by:

  • completeing section 2 of the V750 or V778

If you need to tax the vehicle at the same time you will need:

  • a completed V10 'application for vehicle tax
  • a cheque for the correct vehicle tax

 Renewing or updating your V750/V778

If you don't assign your number to a vehicle and the certificate of entitlement is about to run out you will receive a reminder from us. You can renew it for up to 10 years - otherwise you will lose the right to assign it to your vehicle.

Transfering a registration number

You can transfer your registration:

  • from your vehicle to another one in your name.
  • to a vehicle you're buying.
  • to someone else's vehicle.

You can't transfer a registration number:

  • starting with 'Q' or 'NIQ' for Northern Ireland registered vehicles
  • if it will make the vehicle it's being transfered to look younger.

Both Vehicles must be:

  • registered with DVLA.
  • available for inspection
  • of a type that needs an MOT or heavy goods vehicle (HGV) test certificate,

Both vehicles should be currently taxed. However, if the vehicle that currently has the registration number is not taxed, you can still apply as long as:

  • the tax has run out in the last 5 years
  • there's no break between the date the vehicle tax runs out and the start of the SORN

How to transfer a registration number.

You'll need to complete a V317 'application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number' - if the number is being transfered to someone else's vehicle, then both registered keepers must complete the application.

If either vehicle needs taxing you will also need to enclose:

  • a completed V10 'application for vehicle tax'
  • a certificate of insurance or valid cover for the vehicle.
  • the correct vehicle tax fee.

Retaining a registration number

If you're the registered keeper of a vehicle, you can apply to remove a registration number form the vehicle and hold it on a retention document (V778) for 10 years.

You can retain the registration in your name or someone else's name. This costs £80 for a 10 Year Retention Document

To retain the registration number, the vehicle must be:

  • registered with DVLA
  • available for inspection
  • of a type that needs an MOT test certificate

The vehicle should also be taxed, unless:

  • there's no break between the date the tax runs out and the start of the SORN
  • the tax has run out in the last 12 months.

Send the following to DVLA Swansea -

  • a completed V317 'application to transfer or retain a vehicle registration number' form.
  • the registration certificate for the vehicle or the new keeper supplement with a completed V62 'application for a vehicle registration number' form.
  • an MOT test certificate for the vehicle (if applicable)
  • the fee, payable by cheque to DVLA.

If the vehicle also need taxing you will need to include:

  • a completed V10 'application for vehicle tax'
  • a certificate of insurance or valid cover note.
  • the vehicle tax fee

In order for vehicles to take part in the 'Cherished Transfer Scheme' they must comply with DVLA rules regarding Tax/Sorn.

If a vehicle has no Tax it can still have registrations transfered on and off if the application to transfer the registration mark is lodged within 5 years of the most recent Tax expiry date.

Vehicles which (due to age) are TAX exempt must still be taxed and renewed every year.

Vehicles which (due to age) are MOT exempt (pre 1960 will be required by DVLA to have a voluntary MOT in order to qualify for a Cherished Transfer.
