A telecoms boss was told in may this year that his number plate BO11 LUX was ‘offensive’ by the DVLA and told to remove it – even though he had bought the £399 item from the driving authority’s official website in the first place.
The 49-year-old forced bosses into a U-turn after contacting the secretary of state for transport Philip Hammond and citing a 1977 court case where Richard Branson successfully argued that the Sex Pistols’ ‘Never Mind The B*****ks’ album title was not obscene.
Mr Clarke said ‘I’m relieved that I will no longer have to look over my shoulder for police officers.
‘The DVLA has caused me a lot of inconvenience and I knew I was right all along. If it’s offensive, why did they offer it for sale on their own website?’
The married father of one claimed friends, family and other motorists were amused by the plate on his £60,000 black Range Rover Overfinch.
‘It means my car is unique,’ he said.
