Motorists could be slapped with £1,000 penalty for breaking major driving laws under new plans16-May-2025
Ghost number plates are modified or altered number plates designed to evade detcetion by Automatic Number Plate Recognigtion(ANPR) cameras. They achieve this by using techniques like reflective sprays, transparent films, or alterations to characters, making the plate appear clear to the naked eye but unreadable by infrared cameras.
Currently drivers caught with these illegal plates face only a £100 fine with no penalty points which MPs argue is "hardly a deterrant" for speeding or commiting other driving offences.
