J 5 Number Plate sells for £350,000 07-Aug-2025
ITV reports:
A Jersey number plate has been sold at auction for £350,000.
Any single-digit registration mark is highly sought after. After a bidding war, it was eventually bought by an anonymous online bidder.
The J5 number plate has to be assigned to a vehicle, so it comes with a broken scooter that has no seat and is described by the auction house as having "insignificant value" to focus attention on the registration mark itself.
Simon Drieu from Simon Drieu & Co Auctioneers says: "I've been in this profession for nearly 35 years and this is only the second time that we've managed to get a single-digit registration mark under the hammer.
"It's the prestige of a single-digit number, even four-digit numbers have value, and what may have value to you will mean absolutely nothing to me so it's quite interesting how it all works.
"What you are actually buying is the right to assign this registration mark to your vehicle. The head of motor traffic at the Government of Jersey owns all the number plates."
