UK car production rises in May24-Jun-2015

Total UK car production increased by 2.3 percent in May (compared to May 2014) due to a double-digit rise in demand from domestic buyers, according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).

The latest increase came on the back of a 13.3 percent rise in the number of cars made for the British market, however there was a dip of 0.2 percent in the number of cars built for export. Demand for exports has cooled in recent months from the likes of China and Russia - two of the biggest non-EU export destinations, but SMMT chief executive Mike Hawes is optimistic the numbers will gradually increase.

He said: “We have seen a steady performance in UK car manufacturing this year, with volumes bolstered by a strong home market, while recovery in key European markets is helping to restore export production levels.”

Even with a slight dip in exports, vehicle production in the UK is at its highest since 2008, and the industry is now on track to produce 1.95 million vehicles in the next two years.
